Statesboro Lady Devils hosted South Effingham Mustangs for the Region 2 AAAAAA  at Mill Creek on Tuesday afternoon.  South Effingham came in as the defending Region Champions.  Kate Laircey played really well in winning 6-0,6-2 at first singles.  Kate has played phenomenal this year as she has gone undefeated on the season playing Number 1 singles as only a sophomore.  After dropping a close match at third singles to tie the match up, Julia Basquin then finished off an excellent match winning 6-2,6-2 at second singles.  Julia has also had an outstanding season as she has gone undefeated on the season at second singles being just a sophomore as well.  The Lady Devils dropped a very competitive match at first doubles against the top doubles team in the region to knot the score up at 2-2.  The two freshmen, Jolee Jordan and Mincey Akins, were the last match on court battling for a Region Championship at second doubles.  After winning the first set 6-4, the duo dropped the second set 4-6.  The girls jumped up 3-0 in the third set before dropping the next 3 games.  With both teams on the sidelines cheering for every point, Jolee and Mincey won the last 3 games to claim the 6-4,4-6,6-3 victory and deliver the Lady Devils a Region Championship.  The Lady Devils will host Evans out of Augusta in the first round of State on Friday at 2:00 at the Mill Creek Tennis Center.

 

The boys battled it out with South Effingham and walked away with their 4th straight region championship.  The boys will continue play Monday, April 19 against Rockdale.
