For the third straight season, the Statesboro High School Boy’s tennis team is in the Elite Eight of the Georgia High School Association Tournament with its 4-1 win over the Jackets of Thomas County Central Monday afternoon at Mill Creek Park.
SHS got its first two points from doubles partners Parrish Aldred and Garrison Littles as they defeated Zach Goff and Case Carter (6-1, 6-0) followed by Albert Zheng in singles defeating Nate Bellamy 6-4, 6-4. Also winning big in singles was junior Taylor Gilchrist defeating Ryan Hollingsworth 6-0, 6-0. The doubles team of Candler Jordan and Will Altman went back in forth before defeating Dev Patel and Logan Prince 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Henry Humphries was defeated in singles 4-6, 6-7 (1-7) by Chase Darley.
“We played well,” said Coach Iesha Baldwin. ” Am I really proud of the way this young team has shown mental toughness throughout the region tournament and the state tournament. Henry Humphries has just returned to the lineup suffering from a foot injury and for him to be able to come back and compete says a lot about his competitiveness.”
With the win, the Blue Devils will advance to play Buford in the Elite Eight match later this week in Buford.
