The Statesboro High School’s Basketball Cheer team has undergone many changes this year, but it has not phased them one bit. Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has constructed new rules this year for basketball cheerleading. The girls had to change the wording of their cheers so they were not derogatory to the other teams, but to support their own team. The girls also had to adjust the stomping in the stands because it counted as a distraction. Coach Ashley Thompson said, “This season has been great and the girls have learned many new cheers from the help of Ms. Carol Coleman. She has created cheers to get the crowd more involved.” The captains of the team this year are all juniors and they are Amia Holliday, Valencia Robertson and Vanese Robertson. To be a basketball cheerleader, you have to have great rhyme and movement, and all of the young ladies on this team have it. They always get the student section pumped up and put on a great show. Come check out the cheerleaders’ new cheers at the next basketball game on January 24th against South Effingham High School!
